Drink 2028-2043, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2022

The 2018 Barolo Piè Franco is bright, effusive and beautifully lifted. As it almost always is, the Piè Franco is an ethereal Barolo that emphasizes perfume, persistence and depth of flavor, all in a deceptively light to medium-bodied style that is easy to underestimate. There is some youthful austerity, naturally, but also captivating inner perfume and tons of personality. The 2018 brings back so many memories of tasting in the Cappellano cellar in much simpler times. There was no hype over the wines, no frenzy for the latest releases and no pandemic. The Cappellano Franco is one of the handful of Barolos that transcend wine and enter the realm of culture, family and traditional values. Yes, I liked it. A lot. For readers with very sensitive palate, the volatile acidity feels on the slightly elevated side, but not to the point that it is an issue. Many years ago, Baldo Cappellano asked me not to score his wines, so all Cappellano wines show up on our database as NR.

Cappellano

Serralunga d’Alba’s Cappellano is one of Barolo’s most legendary producers, producing ultra-traditional styles of Nebbiolo. Made famous by Teobaldo and now in the hands of his son Augusto, the estate is best known for its Barolo Piè Franco, a wine from ungrafted vines in the Gabutti Cru.
