Debut vintage. First vintage when they had Cabernet Franc rather than Syrah for Guado al Tasso. The Antinori were worried about making Guado al Tasso too Cabernet Franc heavy, initially. A mild winter and higher-than-average spring temperatures with unusual rains in the second half of August. Fine, dry weather with hot days and cool nights in September led to an ideal harvest. The grapes were sorted by hand before destemming and pressing. After fermentation and a 23-day maceration period, the wine then went into 60-gallon oak barrels to complete malolactic fermentation. The ageing continued for 18 months in barrel before bottling. Exceptionally deep colour. Blackish ruby with a rust-coloured rim. Rich, ripe fully integrated nose with mild hints of 1990s-type ripeness. Hint of balsam and really fairly full-on with a bit of warmth on the finish. Bit of a brow-beater! But it’s easy to see how thrilled they must have been by this wine. Bit of heat but definite Cabernet Franc character too. (JR)

Small production – 20 hl. Very healthy dark luminous crimson. Very marked leafiness on the nose. Even a hint of treacle! A little angular but lovely fruit and aroma. Tingle and freshness. Though a tad furry and thick on the end. (JR)
