The 2013 Vosne Romanée Hautes Maizières comes from more clay soils than the La Combes Brûlées, and has dark berry, mulberry and red plum notes on the nose, bashful at first but opening with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, slightly grainy in texture, with a slightly foursquare but nicely focused finish. Give this 12 to 18 months once bottled.

Sweet dark fresh fruit with a touch of vanilla, which is more pronounced on the palate. Rather delicate in the mouth, but the compact tannins and freshness combine beautifully to give length and elegance. More to come. (JH)

(from clay-and-chalk soil): Good medium red. Spicy redcurrant and red cherry aromas are complicated by a whiff of menthol. Juicy and firm on entry, then quite tight and a bit skinny in the middle. This will definitely need longer than the Combe Brülée to come around. Finishes with a distinctly masculine tannic structure that clamps down on the wine's finishing fruit.

Firm crimson. Lots of depth and grunt. Ripe fruit on the front palate. Very solid. Bit of a rugby player of a wine. (JR)
