Score 96/100 · Drink 2026-2040, Eric Guido, Vinous, Dec 2023

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina is captivating as balsam herbs, wilted violets, and stone dust smolder up, slowly giving way to a core of crushed blackberry. This is pure class, silky and elegant yet racy. Brisk acidity and masses of mineral-tinged dark red fruits saturate the palate, which is lifted by a orange hint toward the close as salty minerals penetrate. Like liquid stone, the 2016 remains youthfully structured, with a wall of fine tannins that grips the senses and a coating of primary concentration that promises balance for a long life. This is an absolutely stunning vintage for Rennina.

Dusty florals, plums, blackberries, dried flowers and hints of ginger rise up from the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina. This is silky and cool-toned in feel, with polished red and black berries; yet even with all of its lift and grace, there’s a density of fruit here and mounting tannins that promise many years of evolution. The long, structured, licorice-tinged finale keeps you guessing at what’s to come with further cellaring. I do believe that an updated score is in order.

Healthy mid ruby. Perfumed, energetic nose of cherry and raspberry with minerally notes and hints of black pepper and perfectly aligned with oak. Transparent and perfumed palate, but not entirely open yet, with finely chiselled long tannins. Gorgeous balance and freshness. (WS)

The Rennina is sourced from three different vineyard sites of different exposition. There are playful and fresh aromatics of primary red plum, cherry cola, and fresh Mediterranean herbs. Refined and supple tannins coat the palate with fresh black raspberry fruit, licorice, and dried violets. The 2016 has richness without weight, is well-balanced, and has a luxurious feel. There is an approachability now, though it will be well enjoyed over the next 15 years. 2022-2036. Pieve Santa Restituta is the Montalcino estate of Piedmont’s iconic Gaja family.
