Compared to the 2002 vintage that seems serendipitously suspended in time, the 2001 Bolgheri Sassicaia is in a more significant downward decline. The 2002 vintage was widely-panned. Back in the day, the 2001 vintage was given a full five stars for excellence. Despite the accolades, this wine does not have much life to give. The bouquet shows aromas of cured meat, petrol, smoke, dried herb and dusty earth. The primary aromas have left the building. The mouthfeel is dry and quickly flat-lining.

Magnum. The first bottle had slight TCA. Wonderful lustrous ruby. Beautiful. Perfect balance. Very clean and stunningly fresh. Yes! Some tannin. Neat. Same sort of build as 2006. Tea leaves and life. Racy and fresh. Almost minty. Great stuff. (JR)

Very cool vintage. Very dark with some black in the colour still. Rather a burnt, tarry note. Even a hint of green, then rather opulent and velvety on the palate though with marked acid and tannin still. This seems more youthful than the 2004! Very vigorous, but with lots still to give. A second bottle was poured. It had a much more developed, flattering nose. Mellifluous and a bit more developed. (JR)
