2020 Abtsberg Riesling Grosses Gewachs

The 2020 Maximin Grünhaus Abtsberg GG is very elegant and subtle yet also intense on the nose, which represents another warm vintage and shows an intense, yellow-fleshed fruit aroma intertwined with saline slate and notes of jelly fruits and chutney. This Ruwer Riesling is round, textured and elegant, singing on the wings of rather mild acidity. It impresses with its long, quiet and saline/crystalline finish. This sustainable and structured wine is part of the Schlosskeller Reserve that the von Schubert family released last year to compensate for the dramatic losses to spring frost in 2024. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2026.

May be it’s a figment of the imagination but the Abtsberg appears to show some extra ripeness, which adds a hint of honey to the sweet fruit and green herbal aromas. On the palate it is still cutting edge with an assertive mineral component adding a slightly medicinal taste to the composition of peach and citrus fruit. Compact and long. (MS)

Still very young and quite yeasty, but tasting this is like gazing down into a deep canyon from the edge. A radically mineral wine that packs staggering concentration into a sleek silhouette (just 12% alcohol). So much wild-herb character! Drinkable now, but better from 2023.
