(75% vendange entier): Good bright, deep red. Deep aromas of black cherry, licorice and chocolatey oak are lifted by floral and peppery nuances. Chewy, complex and deep, showing more stem notes of pepper and spices than game today and thus coming across as detailed and brisk. Very powerful, rich wine with superb depth and energy. The dark berry and chocolatey oak flavors carry through on the very long, refined finish. The tannins here are noble but this wine is a baby today and will require patience.

The 2010 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques is flat-out beautiful. There is plenty of 2010 richness in the glass, yet the wine also has elements of finesse and gracefulness to balance some of its more overt qualities. Dark red cherries, menthol, mint, cinnamon and licorice are woven together beautifully in this delineated, finely sculpted wine. There is a centeredness and poise to the Clos Saint-Jacques that is compelling. The integration of the 100% new oak barrels is masterful. Esmonin used 100% whole clusters here.

Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030. Sylvie Esmonin described 2010 as one the coldest years on record since the 1950s. After a rainy summer, the harvest started at the end of September and finished on October 6. Yields were down 40-60%. Esmonin vinified the 2010s slowly and gently. The malos did not finish until August. I tasted all of the wines from tank. The Cote de Nuits-Villages and Gevrey-Chambertin were too reduced to evaluate, so I will have to wait for another opportunity to taste them. Based on what I did taste, 2010 is a fabulous vintage at this address. Importer: Louis/Dressner Selections, New York, NY; tel. (212) 334-8191

(vinified with 75% whole clusters): Good deep red. Knockout nose offers black cherry, raspberry, spices, flowers, pepper and game, sexed up by sweet oak scents. Dense, silky and fine-grained, but with terrific floral and mineral lift giving this seamless wine a sappy quality and an impression of finesse. Stuffed with fruit but not at all a massive style. Finishes very long, saline and peppery, leaving the mouth vibrating. Has all the elements to make a great bottle. Esmonin told me that she hasn't seen better fruit in her 22 years of winemaking, noting that 75% of the Clos Saint-Jacques grapes were affected by millerandage .
