Score 91/100 · Drink 2019-2025, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Feb 2019

Dark, saturated red. Musky, very ripe aromas of dark cherry and smoked meat. Hugely rich but a bit aggressive initially, with its cherry and mocha flavors complicated by balsamic nuances. With aeration, the wine lost some of its feral quality and took on more fruit while remaining as chewy as a solid. There's sound acidity here juxtaposed with a slightly roasted quality. A drought-year style for sure; less refined than the extraordinary 1990 bottling and probably not going anywhere at this point. (bottle taken from my cellar)
