This is a gorgeous wine that will undoubtedly evolve toward additional silkiness and finesse with more bottle age. This is one of the icon wines of Italy, and its reputation has been carefully built over generations. The 2018 Trebbiano d'Abruzzo plays its best cards in the mouth thanks to its seamless and fluid delivery. The wine is creamy and dense with peach cobbler and bakery aromas, yet it's fleeting and ethereal at the same time. There is a lot of movement and dimension to this vintage that saw a cool spring and a hot summer.

The zesty and wickedly fresh 2018 Trebbiano d’Abruzzo enthralls with a perfumed dusting of confectioners’ spice over a core of lemon confit, lime zest and smoke. This is actually playful and energetic on the palate, packed full of acidity and a sizzling of salty minerals that create a reverberation of tension that travels to your core. A coating of primary concentration lingers on the palate through the lightly structured finale, promising longevity despite the 2018’s undeniably drinkable character today. Frankly, it’s hard not to drink instead of taste.

A relatively dry year in Abruzzo, contrary to the centre and north of Italy. Fermented in large Slavonian oak and local chestnut, with one oak cask dating to 1790. Bottled in 2019. Deep yellow. Youthful and expressive but, knowing the Valentini style, this will close up in the future and demand much more bottle age. Lemon confit with quince and orange. Plenty of extract and substance but still very young. Drinking window is probably conservative, to say the least. (WS)
