Tasting notes
This mixed cased consists of the six greatest Grands Crus vineyards for Chardonnay. Each case contains a bottle of Corton-Charlemagne, Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet and the rarely seen Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet. It’s fascinating tasting through a flight of Montrachets with Nicolas Potel, and the Criots was one of our favourites. Criots is the rarest of the Montrachets, at just 1.57 hectares. The soil here is stonier, producing an elegant and refined style of Chardonnay. In 2020, the wine is enticing with aromas of delicate lemon and almost orange citrus, fine sweet spice, toast and richer tones of white nectarine and flat peach. The palate is refined and vibrant with mouth-watering acidity that drives a long, citrus-peel-edged finish. The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne, Grand Cru is a stunning wine in 2021. Creamy and full, there’s incredible power and depth to this wine, with its broad, mineral framework. There’s a core of intense white peach and citrus zest at its heart, however, building to a long, intense and pithy finish. It perfectly captures the style of the best 2020 white Burgundy. The Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet is the powerhouse of the line-up. The full-bodied palate is rich, intense but retains a beautiful purity of fruit. The nose is full of white fruit aromas with white peach and Mirabelle plums notes. The mid-palate compared to the Criots or the Bâtard is powerful but maintains excellent balance, sitting perfectly between freshness and richness. The acidity is everything in this wine, as it holds the structure and the weight of the wine together. The creamy, long finish brings an extra layer of complexity. The Bâtard-Montrachet is a top example of the vineyard and perfectly translates the finer qualities of the white wines in 2020. It is both elegant and pure. The vibrant aromas of honey, fresh spices, cool apricot and a touch of lemon zest aromas exude from the glass. This is medium-bodied Grand Cru that is multi-dimensional on the mid-palate when the fresh acidity kicks in. The palate has a great complexity, powerful but notably refined and much more elegant than typical. This is stunning and the finish just goes on and on. This is Bâtard-Montrachet with real finesse, just how we like it.
About the producer

Nicolas Potel is one of Burgundy’s most talented and connected winemakers. He created Maison Roche de Bellene, the négoce arm of Domaine de Bellene, in 2008, using his extensive network in the region to source top-quality fruit for an "haute couture" négociant operation.
