Tasted blind, Louis-Michel Liger-Belair's 2015 La Romanée Grand Cru is simply extraordinary, dominating a flight of great grands crus. The wine wafts from the glass with an extraordinarily complex bouquet in which notes of cherries, cassis and orange rind mingle with fragrant aromas of rose petal and Asian spices, complemented by deeper, more savory bass notes of grilled squab, espresso roast and smoked duck. On the palate, it's full-bodied, multidimensional and complete, with amazing depth and dimension, juicy acids balancing a deep and concentrated core of fruit, and concluding with a long, reverberative finish. This is a powerful, even dramatic La Romanée that ranks as one of the pinnacles of this magical vintage.

Dark red with ruby highlights. Superripe but reticent nose offers aromas of black raspberry, mocha, dark chocolate and dried flowers. Voluptuous and utterly seamless in texture but soil-driven stony minerality gives lift and tension to the middle palate and a hint of youthful bitterness to the finish. Shows an intense crushed-berry character complicated by saline minerality. This seriously tannic, powerfully structured grand cru finishes classically dry, with outstanding palate-saturating length. I like the subtle brightening influence of the 15% whole-cluster element. A great example of both its terroir and the vintage, this wine is built for the long haul.

Cask sample. Monopole. Rather reduced nose. Lifted and wild on the palate. A bit of a wayward character. Great tannin quality and with the salty, digestible quality evident in all this domaine’s wines. Lots to chew on. Needs time but it should all knit together eventually. (JR)
