After almost 60 years at Balvenie, David Stewart is one of the most experienced blenders in the business. In fact, he’s the longest-serving Malt Master in Scotch whisky. Batch 7 of Balvenie’s Tun 1509 perfectly exemplifies his skill. He selected 21 of his favourite barrels from the distillery’s stores: four American oak, 10 Sherry butts and seven hogsheads. These then spent three months knitting together in a traditional tun – creating a spirit that is much more than the sum of its parts. Non-chill-filtered and 52.4% alcohol, this is a beautiful single malt – layered with sweet oak, dried fruit and baking spice, building to a long, malty, vanilla-spice finish.
