Tasting Notes
Millésime 1979 was the first ever vintage launched by Cognac Frapin in 1998. At the time, one cask was held back for further ageing and, four decades later, this last barrel was released. The provenance of vintage Cognac is unparalleled, making it a special rarity. Casks are sealed with red wax and aged in locked cellars which require two keys to gain access. One key is held by the Cognac house and another by the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac. These tightly regulated controls may deter some from regular vintage releases, but not Frapin, one of the region’s most esteemed houses. Since 1270 and for 21 generations, Frapin has grown vines in the heart of the finest cru of Cognac, Grande Champagne. Its role as a vigneron, as well as a distiller, ensures meticulous attention to detail and regular “best in class” awards. A hallmark of Cognac Frapin is the influence of its cellars and the marked variation in style dependant on whether maturation takes place in either humid or dry conditions. The 1979 vintage has been aged for 40 years in their dry cellars, bringing finesse and elegance. According to the house, a “real treasure of Frapin, it is a loyal representation of our ancestral know-how”. Limited to just 180 bottles, each presented in an imitation leather case, it is difficult to find such phenomenal value for such a precious spirit.
