2019 Abtsberg Riesling Grosses Gewachs

AP number 16 20. Light, discreet nose again. Less open than the Herrenberg and there still seem to be some fermentation aromas here. Still slightly astringent and a bit ungenerous at the moment. It's unusual to prefer the Herrenberg to the Abtsberg. Perhaps this is just too young? (JR)

From another very warm year with several peaks of summer heat, the 2019 Maximin Grünhaus Abtsberg GG is concentrated and aromatic on the floral nose that is reminiscent of finely weathered green slate. It's airy yet delicate in its aromatic and fruity intensity, and it's starting to enter the wide open "perfect to drink now" window that Mosel, Saar and Ruwer Rieslings are world-famous for. Dense and concentrated, possibly with some percent of botrytis or at least over-ripeness, this is a fruity, textured and very fleshy Abtsberg, which is a fascinating contrast to the filigreed and airy 2021 classic. The 2019 Abstberg is part of the Schlosskeller Reserve that the von Schubert family released last year to compensate for the dramatic losses to spring frost in 2024. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork.
