Tasting notes
Barbaresco. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Brooding nose hinting at power. Iron and orange. Old school? Firm stalky tannins that dominate the palate for the moment. Unpolished, youthful toughness. (WS)

As always, the 2011 Barbaresco Ovello is the most linear of the estate's Barbarescos. Then again, that is the key signature of this cool site in Barbaresco. Precise and finely cut, the 2011 offers an intriguing combination of classic Ovello energy allied with the softer, gentler contours of the warm vintage. Still, this is the most reticent of the 2011 Cantina del Pino Barbarescos, and the wine that will need the most time to show the full breadth of its personality.
The 2011 Barbaresco Ovello does not disappoint. Vintner Renato Vacca prefers to release his wines later than most and that extra year of bottle aging has been very good to this 2011 expression. The wine has had time to find focus and sharpness despite the warmth of the vintage. Bold fruit flavors of blackberry and cassis are followed by balanced tones of spice and balsam herb. The fruit shows a soft and extra plush quality. Ovello is one of the greatest crus in the Barbaresco township.
