Score 91/100 · Drink 2022-2032, Neal Martin, Jan 2022

The 2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru has a slightly reduced bouquet, but there is plenty of brambly red fruit here and a sense of mineralité . The palate is well balanced with a slightly gritty entry, lightly spiced with white pepper and sage and just a touch of dryness toward the finish. I would drink this sooner rather than later. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has quite an intense nose, a little smudged, with touches of menthol permeating the black cherry fruit. The palate is grippy on the entry, displaying smooth tannin and fine acidity, but curiously, perplexingly, I find it just missing the charm and sophistication of the domaine’s Premier Crus on the rather blocky finish. The jury is out on this one (for now.)

The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru offers up aromas of spices, ripe cherries, cassis, incense, plums and toasty new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, rich and textural, with a firm chassis of structuring tannins poking out behind its succulent core of fruit, with good depth at the core and a long finish. As readers will know, the Clos Vougeot hails from a rented parcel over which Liger-Belair has complete control.
