("these vines are 65 years old, like me," noted Philippe Livera, adding that a small percentage of them actually date back to the 1920s; aged in 60% new oak): Bright, dark ruby-red. Dark aromas of black cherry, blueberry, blackberry, violet and bitter chocolate convey a liqueur-like ripeness. A compellingly plush, thick, refined wine with terrific energy and focus. The dark fruit flavors are enlivened by sexy soil tones and pungent minerality. Really blossomed in the glass with aeration, finishing with noble tannins and terrific building length. This fruit was picked at 13.5% and chaptalized to 14.5% but the alcohol does not stand out. Livera says he'd wait eight to ten years before drinking this, and it certainly appears to possess bulletproof fruit. Consider me impressed.

Bright crimson. Perhaps a slight extra layer of ripeness but not really another league from the Clos Village! Dense and with bitter fruit. Pretty solid. Quite grainy tannins. Lots of punch. (JR)

(from the lieu-dit Les Gémeaux, just below Clos de Bèze; the Liveras sent two new barrels of this wine to Jadot in March, using Jadot's barrels, and kept four for themselves, three of which were new): Saturated ruby-red. Penetrating, pure scents of blackberry, licorice and crushed stone. Sappy and superconcentrated, offering a creamy framboise sweetness leavened by outstanding energy. This utterly seamless grand cru finishes with noble tannins and outstanding rising length. Philippe Livera told me that these vines are his age: 63.
