Score 90/100 · Drink 2022-2025, Eric Guido, Vinous, Jan 2023

The sweetly-scented 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is a total pleasure, as rosy florals and bright cherries are perfectly accentuated by nuances of allspice and clove. It’s luscious, nearly fleshy in feel, yet balance is expertly maintained through vibrant acidity, as mineral-tinged red fruits and inner florals cascade across the palate. There’s a zesty citrus twang through the finale, and a bit of a nervous feel throughout, yet it only adds to the 2012’s drink-me-now character. While completely matured, this is in a beautiful place today.

Maturing ruby with orange tinges. Savoury and a little meaty on the nose with nutty notes and compact, concentrated palate with hints of dried fruit. Genuine and with a complex finish. (WS)

Donatella Cinelli Colombini's 2012 Brunello di Montalcino has absorbed more of the summer heat (compared to the Prime Donne selection). The wine shows a round and supple personality with ripe cherry, blackberry preserves and dark spice. The bouquet is more approachable and immediately appealing. This is a fantastic wine to eat in the near term. I can't help but think of how good it would taste across from one of those juicy, boutique burgers you find at the best restaurants. The mouthfeel is soft and creamy with integrated tannins from both the fruit and the oak used.

Tasted blind. Deep ruby with orange tinges. Ripe and deep, tangy, dark-fruit nose suggesting lots of concentration and a layer of spice and tarry notes suggesting advanced evolution. Sappy, rich cherry fruit with plenty of bitter, coating tannins. The palate is much more youthful than the nose at this stage. (WS)
