The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is deeper in color than its peers. The signature Esmonin aromatics feature plenty of upfront, bold black cherries and raspberry fruit, a little confit, well-defined but requiring more years in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, quite strict tannins. This has closed down since I last tasted it. Very linear and grippy on the finish. Cellar away for several years. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has strong floral scents on the nose, lavender and violets almost dominating the black cherry and boysenberry fruit; it comes across very strong at the moment. The palate is sweet and candied on the entry, offering dark cherries, marmalade, blueberry and hoisin and plenty of black plum on the honey-textured finish; there is something a little Oriental about this Clos Saint-Jacques. Give it four or five years in bottle.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru includes 50% whole bunch fruit and matures in 60% new oak. It has an intense bouquet with notes of blackberry, blueberry, crushed stone and hints of graphite, the terroir showing through nicely here. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit and gentle grip. I feel the new oak taking a more backseat role compared to previous vintages, that allows the terroir to really show through on the precise finish. This is an excellent Clos Saint-Jacques from Sylvie Esmonin.
