What a thrill it is to taste Cappellano’s 2001 Barolo Otin Fiorin Piè Franco - Michet. The 2001 is one of the first vintages I bought heavily on release, so I can’t say I am surprised by how strong it is tonight, but I am delighted to see it has such a strong showing in this setting. The 2001 is deep, explosive and full of character, with enough structure to age for years to come. What a wine!

Baldo Cappellano’s 2001 Barolo Pie Franco-Michet takes me back to the days I used to taste with him in that tiny cellar at the base of Serralunga. Surprisingly powerful and deep, the 2001 is frankly even more impressive than I remember it. In a word: superb!
Cappellano's 2001 Barolo Pie Franco, made from the Michet clone on ungrafted rootstock, is one of the region's most unique, quirky cult wines, and is a must-have wine for anyone who loves traditionally made Barolo. It displays an extraordinary, captivating nose redolent of balsamic and spice notes. As it sits in the glass layers of finessed, deeply expressive fruit gradually emerge, revealing a massively structured wine of superb length as well as personality, with fine tannins to round out the finish.
About the producer
Serralunga d’Alba’s Cappellano is one of Barolo’s most legendary producers, producing ultra-traditional styles of Nebbiolo. Made famous by Teobaldo and now in the hands of his son Augusto, the estate is best known for its Barolo Piè Franco, a wine from ungrafted vines in the Gabutti Cru.
