Ruffino's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Greppone Mazzi shows ripe tones of cherry and dark fruit with sour cherry and leather at the back. The bouquet is slightly disjointed and the aromas are rather monolithic and one-dimensional. After a few swift swirls in the glass, the wine begins to show licorice, tar and chewing tobacco. This is a nice, but not a spectacular Brunello from one of the best vintages in recent memory. It's better suited for near-term consumption.

Mature mid ruby with broad orange rim. Balsamic, savoury cherry nose but otherwise pretty much closed. Very backward on the palate too. A true slow burner, but the balance seems right. (WS)
