Tasting notes
From a site just to the north of Clos-de-Beze, the 2016 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru from Bernstein shows a perfumed, sappy flower, strawberry and spiced raspberry-scented bouquet that turns more towards dark fruits, game, mint, and sweet truffle with time in the glass. Ripe, medium to full-bodied, expansive, and downright sexy on the palate, it shows the more classic style of the 2016 vintage with air but certainly has loads of upfront charm, personality, and character even today. With sweet tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish, it's just another thrilling wine from Olivier Bernstein. It's drinking spectacularly well today yet give bottles 4-5 years of bottle age, count yourself lucky, and enjoy bottles over the following 20+ years.

Dark red-ruby. Wild but reticent nose offers scents of black raspberry, spices, game, coffee and mint. Then wonderfully rich and surprisingly sweet in the mouth, with a deep core of dark berry, Asian spice and licorice flavors accented by a tangy peppery quality. Expands impressively on the back half, finishing with suave, fine-grained tannins, a captivating blend of sweetness and spiciness, and lingering perfume that goes on and on.
His own vines now. About 70% whole bunch. 100% new oak. Barrel sample. Lovely perfume with serious undertow. A hint of leather. Pretty glorious. Masculine – pomade?! Lots of glory here. Mulberry compote somewhere in the background too. Long and vibrato. (JR)
