Massataka Taketsuru spent the beginning of the last century completing apprenticeships at Scottish distilleries Longmorn and Hazelburn where he learnt the art of distilling and blending truly exceptional whiskies. On return to Japan, Taketsuru first helped establish Yamazaki distillery before leaving to establish a distillery in the district of Yoichi, at a site he believed had the perfect climate for producing the finest whisky possible. Heavy, rich and slightly smoky in character, Taketsuru is created by blending malt whisky from Yoichi alongside Nikka’s other malt distillery, Miyagikyo. Located in a cooler climate, Miyagikyo marries a lighter fruitier spirit with Yoichi’s strong character. The result is a multi-award winning combination.
