Score 93/100 · Drink 2024-2034, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2017

(the Lécheneauts' father planted these vines almost 60 years ago): Bright, dark red with ruby tones. Highly complex nose combines purple fruits, espresso, a wild hint of game and a sexy peppery accent. The sweetest, fullest and largest-scaled of this collection, a bit reserved on the attack but already conveying terrific spicy lift. Very sappy, savory Clos de la Roche with captivating soil-driven perfume. Not initially as powerful as the Pruliers but really expands toward the back and shimmers on the long, suave aftertaste, leaving the salivary glands vibrating. The tannins are substantial but fine-grained.

Bright ruby-red. Slightly reduced, wild aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, mocha, game and spicy oak. Plush and round on entry, then more powerful on the back half, showing terrific generosity and sweetness to its flavors of dark berries, violet and spices. Very refined tannins and a ripe note of chocolate belie this wine's firm underlying backbone.
