The Versos 1891 was originally a gift to Manuel Barbadillo by his father as a christening present in 1891, and was already then described as an old Amontillado. Aged in an old American cask in the humid cellars of Barbadillo in Sanlucar de Barrameda. Just 100 bottles were drawn from the cask (which holds about 500 litres) for this special release. The rest of the cask will be topped up using their Reliquia Amontillado . Deep, burnished gold, and an intensely burnished aroma of apricots reduced down to their essence, almost caramelised, but there’s also a smoky intensity and a dry and amazingly fresh finish. Terrific concentration of all components so that all is still in balance. Very very persistent. Glorious. (JH)
