A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Verdot and 8% Merlot, the medium garnet-brick colored 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill Estate Vineyard is a little reticent to begin, opening out to the most incredible perfume of fragrant lilacs and rose hip tea over a beautiful core of cassis, warm blackberries, chocolate-covered cherries and bay leaves with touches of cloves and cinnamon stick. Full-bodied, rich and tautly structured with ripe, grainy tannins, it offers great poise as well as depth, finishing with great length.

The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is still quite primary considering its age and the vintage. Caught in an in-between stage, the 2004 is neither young nor old, but it does need at least few years more in bottle to soften. Ripe dark fruit, smoke, tobacco, licorice and earthiness open up gradually. Stylistically, the 2004 seems quite different from the wines Chappellet is making today in terms of its up-front ripeness and sweetness. Of course, part of that may have been the vintage, but I think there is more to it than just that.
