Tasting notes
The 2000 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is far better than the previous bottle I tasted several years ago. It has an engaging bouquet with scents of brown spice, black truffle, espresso and autumn leaves that infuse the dusky, almost introspective black fruit that bide their time unfurling in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with lightly spiced black fruit and shaved black truffle. Granted, it feels a little rustic compared to Nicolas Groffier’s wines nowadays but you cannot help falling for the unexpected candied and refreshing, menthol-tinged finish. This is a fine Bonnes-Mares even if I cannot see it improving further with bottle age. Tasted at the Domaine.

Spiced black cherries are found in the deep aromatics of the 2000 Bonnes Mares. Regrettably, this light to medium-bodied effort’s delightful, satin-textured, red cherry-packed attack is constricted by a tight finish. Drink it over the next 5 years.
