The 2011 Roc de Cambes has a pretty nose with raspberry, crushed strawberry and dark chocolate scents, a little oaky, more modern in style that its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, dark chocolate and espresso in fusing the dark berry fruit with a slightly fleshier finish. Fine. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.

Tasted blind. Bit of a ruby glow at the rim. Interesting vegy notes on the nose. Sweet tea and nicely developed tannins. Real freshness as well as richness. Then a dry but not drying finish. Just a little bit of heat. (JR)

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines are planted in a natural amphitheatre, overlooking the Gironde estuary. Shaded deep, glowing ruby. Heady nose with masses of voluptuous fruit just on the cusp of being over the top – as usual for a Mitjavile wine! A little dusty on the finish and I’m not sure I’d want it with much more bottle age… (JR)

A terrible year in Bordeaux – spring drought, which is very rare. Vegetation suffered. Some vineyards lost leaves at the end of July and some vines did not ripen. Had to break up the soils. Very dry and dark and firmly tannic but still pretty ripe. No red fruits here, atypical for Roc. Firm and chewy and almost bitter on the finish. No confit fruits, no mature fruits, all dark and pure. But it is a really 'masculine' power here in the tannins on the finish. Unexpectedly persistent. (JH)
