Aromas of smoked meat, iron and roasted, spicy oak; this smells tannic! Sweet on entry, then less open in the middle palate; in a harder, very spicy style but with very good flavor intensity. Today, though, the dusty tannins cut off the wine's fruit. This will need at least four or five years of aging, if not considerably longer.

Waxy, creamy blackberries are found in the nose of the 2003 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St.-Jacques. Medium-bodied, dense, and tarry, its velvety-textured character slathers the palate with candied black fruits that linger in its admirably long finish. Projected maturity: 2008-2016. Red-ruby. Reticent nose hints at coffee and sweet oak. Locked up tight today and revealing very little personality. I don't get a lot of sweetness here. Finishes with noteworthy persistence but today the tannins dominate. Seems clearly less successful than the Champeaux.
