Score 92/100 · Drink 2018-2023, Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, May 2011

The 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Coeur du Roi, from vines ranging from 50-100 years of age, powers through the palate with superb density and focus. This shows terrific depth and richness, but it, too, is painfully young. Still, it is impossible not to admire the wine’s sheer precision and fabulous overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2023. Bernard Dugat farms 10 hectares of vineyards, 6.5 of which he and his family own outright. The Dugat-Py wines are breathtaking for their richness and depth. Despite their sheer concentration, the wines retain tons of vineyard and vintage character. These are some of the most viscerally thrilling, exciting wines I tasted on my recent trip through Burgundy. The only 2009 I wasn’t able to taste was the Pommard, which had been bottled just prior to my visit. Importer: Peter Weygandt, Unionville, PA; tel. (610) 486-0800

(from 90-year-old vines; vinified with 50% whole clusters) Good deep ruby. Captivating nose combines black fruits, violet and minerals. Juicy and intense, with more density of material to support its firm acidity than the Vosne villages Nicely ripe, powerful wine with a distinctly black character. Perhaps just a touch of malic acidity remaining.

60-70% whole bunch, 50-100-yr-old vines. The only cuvée we tasted which had not yet finished malolactic fermentation. Firm and rather brutal flavours. Very dry finish. Lightly fizzy still but with some smooth texture and again a little bit of green stemminess. (JR)
