Very deep purple. Lots of oak and modern vinification. Inky, sweet. Very sweet and exciting, but a bit jagged and painful. Overoaked on the finish. Slightly pastiche. (JR)

This producer made an exceptionally fine 1998 too (see my tasting notes) although, as is to be expected, the 1997 has considerably more oomph. This wine is a miracle of excitement, lift and even relative approachability considering its provenance and vintage. There is masses tucked in here for the next decade but if you absolutely had to drink a 1997 Brunello now, this would be one to consider. (JR)
