Half bottle. Brick-red rim but still good depth of colour at the core. Meaty bovril aroma, which became stronger on the day after opening, gives way to mushroom and still some vestiges of red fruit. Tannins are totally resolved and the whole is still deliciously fresh. Even though the tertiary character dominates, especially that meaty flavour, there is still plenty of pleasure here – silky and elegant in that more savoury flavour spectrum. (JH)

Very fresh Merlot nose (this is all-Merlot in 2003, containing 15 per cent of Merlot press wine) and juicy/approachable. Soft start. Very refreshing although there is a little inkiness on the finish – perhaps thanks to that press wine. Lightweight but charming. (JR)
