It is hard to imagine the painstaking efforts it must have taken to produce such a powerful and generous Spätburgunder in 2010. I would never say that Becker’s Spätburgunders are the most seductive or sophisticated, but they excel in perfume, power and intensity. The Sankt Paul of 2010 seems to (wisely) have been furnished with a little less barrique backbone than previous vintages, which only serves to bring to the fore a superb collection of ripe berry fruit. A gently roasted character lends its support to an intriguing flavour profile which also draws strength from delicate spicy and peppery notes. I admit that I have a problem with the Becker price structure, but in 2010 they have earned their money. (MS)
