Sporting a deep purple, opaque color, the 2005 Bernard Burgaud Côte-Rôtie offers beautiful aromatics of spiced dark fruits, subtle smoked meats, leather and copious mineral, stone and iron aromas. These lead into a medium bodied wine that offers beautifully focused fruit, a clean, firm texture, vibrant acidity (lots of acidity) and a long finish. More precise and structured than the ’06, this should be cellared for another 3 to 4 years and then should drink well over the following 10 years.

Deep ruby. Powerful blackberry and dark cherry aromas are brightened by exotic floral and smoky mineral qualities. Lush and creamy but with firm structure; the sweet red and dark fruit flavors end with supple tannins and a long, sappy finish. This wine's perfume grew with air, picking up sandalwood, tobacco and mocha. "Give it at least ten years," Burgaud advises.

Inky ruby. Deep, rich nose offers powerful kirsch, raspberry and dark chocolate aromas. Strikingly pure, with sweet dark berry flavors and an impressively supple texture, but with lively acidity helping to maintain focus ("that's a characteristic of the vintage," Burgaud notes, "good acidity and velvety texture."). The finish is very long, with well-integrated tannins and a late note of cherry pit.

Very dark crimson. Cask sample lacking a little freshness on the nose though not intensity. A little tough and rustic. Tannins a bit dry. (JR)
