Tasting notes
The 2008 Carema Etichetta Nera is another stellar wine in this range. Deep and layered in the glass, the 2008 possesses notable mid-palate depth and textural intensity. Still quite young and imposing, the 2008 has aged so well. Macerated black cherry, leather, licorice and coffee are all amplified in this potent Carema. The growing season was marked by a cold spring and warm summer. Oak signatures remain a bit prominent for my taste in a mature wine, but there is no question the 2008 is showing beautifully.

The estate's 2008 Carema Etichetta Nera comes across as forced. Vintage 2008 was not a year to make rich, concentrated wines, which certainly seems like the intent. The oak is simply too much for the wine's medium-bodied structure.

The oak is simply too much for the wine’s medium-bodied structure. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. Ferrando is a great source for interesting and intriguing wines that showcase the potential of Nebbiolo in Carema, a tiny appellation in northern Piedmont. Once again, I have a preference for Ferrando’s Etichetta Bianca (White Label) as it has more varietal and site-specific expressiveness. Importer: Rosenthal Wine Merchants, Pine Plains, NY; tel.
