Score 92/100 · Drink 2004-2014, Pierre Rovani, Oct 2002

Buttery white fruits and stones can be found in the mouth of the smoked mineral-scented 2001 Riesling Auslese Niederhauser Hermannshohle. Medium-bodied and thick, this wine has a plush, velvety character whose effects linger on the palate for 30 seconds. It does not have the exceptional focus and delineation of Donnhoff's greatest 2001s yet remains outstanding. Drink it between 2004 and 2014. Helmut Donnhoff approached the 2001 vintage much as Reggie Jackson would have reacted to facing a fast ball down the middle thrown by a Junior Varsity pitcher in the bottom of the ninth of the last game of the World Series. Donnhoff hit a towering, grand slam home run of majestic proportions. His 2001s are extraordinary. Importer: Terry Theise Estate Selections, imported by Michael Skurnik Wines, Inc., Syosset, NY; tel. Very, very rich and nutty. Positively thick. Dripping with extract. (JR)
