Score 100/100 · Drink 2025-2040, Jeb Dunnuck, Sep 2025

Tasted from numerous bottles from opening through the end of the evening, the 1997 Sperss was a showstopper from start to finish. It was showcased alongside the Bruno Giacosa 2000 Barbaresco Riserva Asili. From the era when some Barbera was included in the blend and not categorized as Barolo at that time, it boasts freshness and length, with incredible energy and balance. Notes of black cherry cordial, truffle, gravelly earth, leather, and dried lavender emerge and last long through the finish. The palate retains structure, with plenty of ripe fruit through the mid-palate and finish. It's showing exceptionally well, and while it’s at or nearing its peak, it should have easily another 15 or more years of prime drinking ahead. Drink 2025-2040.

Admittedly, Gaja’s 1997 Sperss doesn’t quite hit the high notes it so often does. More often than not, the 1997 has been pretty much open for business, but this bottle is more reticent than other recent examples.

The 1997 Gaja Sperss is another wine that is showing beautifully, although this bottle isn’t as profound as others have been. Layers of dark, mineral-inflected Serralunga fruit flow across the palate as the 1997 struts its stuff. The 1997 Sperss is showy, as it usually is, but falls short of being truly thrilling.

We caught the 1997s from Piedmont at the very summit of their beauty. Gaja's 1997 Sperss is a wine I have enjoyed often over the years, but this bottle was on another level entirely. The stars aligned as the room tasted this spectacular, utterly breathtaking wine. Words alone can't possibly convey the sheer beauty of the 1997 Sperss. Perfect. That's all I can really say.
