Score 18.5/20 · Drink 1970-2020, Jancis Robinson MW, Jan 2014

I don't whether it was because of how the wine was shaken up en route to the Chop House or because of the decanting process or because of the wine itself, but this wine was much less clear than the 1953 Cheval served alongside. Fully mature ruby colour. Lovely richness and spice on the nose and an immense amount of sweetness but less frankness than the Cheval.  It still finished fresh, however, and showed no signs of decay – just a very slightly soupy character.   (JR)
