According to Wine Advocate’s Stephan Reinhardt Weingut Prager’s 2015 Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners are mind-blowing. He admits: “I have still a lot of 2015s to taste but Toni Bodenstein's [Franz Prager’s son-in-law] collection of Riesling and Grüner Veltliner Smaragds set the benchmark. There are world class wines amongst them, true classics of which we will still sing in 20 or 30 years. Weingut Prager has probably bottled the finest Achleiten Veltliners I have ever tasted.”

He described them as “concentrated, very pure, clear, fresh” and as having “great expression”. The scores reflect his high opinion with Prager producing the three highest-rated Austrian wines of the vintage according to Wine Advocate. And this should come as no surprise as Robert Parker says this winery’sdazzling range takes dry Riesling “to the outer limits of complexity achievable” and “has become increasingly serious and successful with Grüner Veltliner.”

With so much hype surrounding 2015 Bordeaux, 2015 Burgundy, 2015 Rhône and 2015 Germany, one could be forgiven for overlooking how well other regions performed in this vintage, for example Austria. Wine Advocate’s Stephan Reinhardt has called 2015 in Austria a great vintage and Julia Harding MW, writing for Jancis Robinson, has also complimented “Austria’s impressive 2015 whites”.

Even at this early stage, these wines look set to be highlights of the vintage…
