The 2015 Rhône vintage should be firmly on all collectors’ radars, as many are touting this as one of the best ever. But the whites are too often overlooked even in great Rhône vintages, and Jeb Dunnuck of Wine Advocate notes that this would be a mistake as “this is a fabulous vintage for the whites!”
One such 2015 Rhône white that has just been released and left him “blown away” was Raymond Usseglio’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pure Roussanne 2015, currently available direct from the domaine. Hailing from vines on Bois Sénéchaux and Terres Blanches, this consistently high scorer on Wine Advocate and Vinous is highly unusual in being a single varietal Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc.
Awarding this 100% Roussanne “beauty” 95 points, Jeb Dunnuck described it as “impeccably balanced and layered” with “perfectly integrated acidity” that will “keep for decades if you’re so inclined.” Wine Advocate’s score placed this wine seventh out of all the Rhône whites reviewed at time of release.
The minor downside is that Domaine Raymond Usseglio has only a tiny plot of white grapes; three hectares planted with Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette and Bourboulenc. As a result, in Jeb Dunnuck’s words, “unfortunately there’s only 600 cases made.” This means that this rich, biodynamically-farmed Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc will become exceedingly hard to track down unless snapped up soon after this release…
