Pierre Gimonnet’s “explosive” Cuvee Fleuron 2009 is one of the Antonio Galloni's highest scoring Champagnes of the 2009 vintage so far. It is a 95 point blockbuster that “exudes richness” and is a very compelling wine for any fan of the region.
The house style of Gimonnet of one of lean and focused minerality and this works very well with a big, forward vintage such as 2009. It means that while the Cuvee Fleuron is “round, voluptuous and racy” it still has all-important freshness to balance the power and intensity of fruit. Galloni says of Gimonnet, “when the wines are well-balanced, they are terrific” and this 2009 does seem to be a textbook example.
The Fleuron is only made in the best years and blended from selections from across Gimonnet’s holdings including some very special ancient vines in the Grand Cru village of Cramant. The resulting Champagne is clearly something well-worth seeking out and at the equivalent of under £27 a bottle in bond, it is one of the great bargains of the 2009 vintage.
