The wines from Familia Nin-Ortiz are a perfect example of the best of Priorat; artisanal in style, high quality and exceptionally rare, they sum up just why the cuvees from this exclusive region are so sought-after. The 2014s have just been reviewed by Spanish wine critic Luis Gutierrez with eye-catching results: the Nit de Nin received a huge 97 points, while the Planetes de Nin was awarded 94, its best ever score.
Familia Nin-Ortiz is the creation of Ester Nin and her husband Carles Ortiz. Ester is best known for her work as an oenologist at Priorat stalwart Clos Erasmus. She bought her own parcel of vines in 2004 and launched Nit de Nin that year. Ten years on, Nit de Nin has become one of Priorat’s foremost cult wines. This success aside, production at the estate is stil a family affair, Ester takes care of the winemaking while Carles minds the vines, hand-harvesting all grapes and transporting them with the help of his two mules.
Celebrating its tenth vintage in 2014, the Nit de Nin is the flagship of the property. An intense and captivating blend of Garnacha and Carinera, it is made in truly tiny quantities – just 600 cases of six bottles are produced a year. Given that the 2014 has 97 points and marks ten years since the wine’s creation, we are confident that it won’t be around for long…
The Planetes de Nin is a perfect partner, offering ”very good value” in a region where the geography means winemaking is expensive. Gutierrez compared the 2012 it in style to the Burgundies of Vosne-Romanee, resulting in a wine that is “very difficult to resist”. With just 8,344 bottles made, it may also become difficult to find. The 2014 has the same score as the 2012, meaning we expect it to disappear just as quickly…
