Early reports from 2016 Burgundy do not paint a pretty picture. Bad weather has severely reduced the crop. The small size of the average domaine simply cannot absorb the knock-on costs. And with 2015 being touted as potentially the finest vintage since 2005, certainly since 2010, it is hard to imagine prices will remain static over the coming year or two.
This makes the great value 2014 Chablis Mont de Milieu 1er Cru from Chablis master Domaine Billaud-Simon a compelling offer. It received 91-94 points from Allen Meadows, a score that he interprets as “Outstanding. Worth a special effort to purchase and cellar and will provide memorable drinking experiences.”
This old vine wine with just a touch of oak also impressed Stephen Tanzer, who praised its “serious energy and thrust” and concluded: “This beauty is concentrated, full and very long.”
Billaud-Simon have borne the brunt of the inclement weather in 2016 and with the early indication that 2015 prices are higher, this may well be the last chance to pick up such astonishing value for a while.
