2018 Chateau des Jacques

2018 Moulin A Vent Clos de Rochegres, Château des Jacques

From a stunning vintage, a fantastic producer and an up-and-coming wine region, I am delighted to offer the brilliant new release of the 2018 Moulin A Vent Clos de Rochegres from Chateau des Jacques. Ludicrously well priced, drinking beautifully now (and will continue to do so for many years) this is a wine that represents extraordinary value at just £199 per case of 12 in bond.

2018 continues a tremendous run of form for Beaujolais with James Suckling noting that “Beaujolais is on a roll, not to mention the just-coming-out superb 2018” vintage. It’s a superb vintage that for Suckling compares to the historic 2015s – and “may be even better than 2015…. Great vintages like these can age.”

Owned by Louis Jadot, Chateau des Jacques is an under the radar gem for those lucky enough to be in the know; a spectacular winery producing Beaujolais that gives Premier Cru Pinot Noir stiff competition, a reminder of Moulin-a-Vent’s illustrious history when the top vineyards here once commanded a higher price tag than some of Burgundy’s most revered Grand Crus.

The stunning Clos de Rochegres is situated at the summit of the Moulin-a-Vent appellation on the border with Fleurie. Made from 100% Gamay, hand-harvested and then aged in oak barrels for 10 months before release, resulting in a wine that offers up an opulent, polished and floral expression that will age beautifully for a few years.

Medium ruby, with fresh yet ripe red fruits on the nose – cranberries, redcurrants and crunchy red cherries, as well as darker plum and sweet blackcurrants. Amazingly lifted and energetic on the palate, with depth and power, surrounded by plush, silky tannins. Elegant touches of cinnamon and oak spice and a long, linear finish and amazing freshness. Despite ample charm already, there is a structure and firmness at the core that suggests great ageability.  FINE+RARE (Apr 2019).
