Superstar Raúl Pérez is one of Spain’s most eminent winemakers, rated 5 out of 5 stars by Robert Parker who is a huge fan: "These are brilliant, artisanal, handcrafted wines that words simply cannot begin to describe. They must be experienced to be believed."  Expertly combining biodynamic practices, minimal interaction with the vineyard and fruit from ancient vines, Pérez produces “tiny quantities of outrageously good wine” from obscure wine regions such as Bierzo.

Castro Ventosa in Bierzo is therefore a bit of a hidden gem as this is Raúl Pérez’s family winery, and he remains responsible for all of the winemaking there. Founded by the Perez family in 1752, it has been family-run ever since. The vineyards are planted on quartz and slate soils, producing Mencia wines of balance and freshness. The finest wine of the range is Cepas Centenarias which is made from low yielding vines which are over 100 years of age.

The 2014 wines have caught the attention of Wine Advocate’s man in Spain, Luis Gutiérrez. Calling Raúl Pérez a superstar, the critic has said: 2014 has to be one of the finest vintages in recent times, with very floral, aromatic and elegant wines.” We are therefore delighted to be able to provide access to two of Casstro Ventosa’s exquisite and high-scoring Mencia-based wines from this vintage…

Valtuille Cepas Centenarias 2014 (only 583 cases made): 96 points, “This has to be finest vintage for this bottle.” - Luis Gutiérrez

Valtuille El Repalao 2014 (only 183 cases made, old vines, one of the best vineyards in Valtuille): 95 points, “Very elegant and balanced.” - Luis Gutiérrez

Although Luis Gutierrez notes that “Raúl Pérez should need no introduction by now”, his wines do still fly slightly beneath the radar. Valtuille is Pérez’s home village and the village with the most land under vine in Bierzo. Pérez is one of the superstars of Spanish wine, consulting and mentoring far and wide, he has placed Valtuille firmly on the world wine map. Hailing from 2014 – a truly impressive year for Pérez according to Wine Advocate – these wines are not to be missed…
