Scotland’s lost distillery Holy Trinity

Since their closure, Scotland’s so-called Holy Trinity of lost distilleries – Port Ellen, Brora and Rosebank – have developed cult-like status for their unique and alluring single malts.

Never to be produced in the same way again, these whiskies are forever lost in time.

Bottlings from these hallowed producers are some of the most highly coveted in the world – regularly fetching tens of thousands of pounds at auction.

We’ve selected one bottle from each of the once-lost Islay, Highland and Lowland icons.

This 40-year-old single malt is one of the oldest known bottlings from the once-lost Islay distillery. Distilled four years before Port Ellen was mothballed in 1983, this whisky formed part of Diageo’s highly sought-after Casks of Distinction series. Port Ellen 40 Year Old will only increase in collectability as the distillery reawakens in 2023.

Brora

This 40-year-old Brora single malt was initially released to commemorate the Highland distillery’s 200th anniversary. Established in 1819, the distillery fell victim to the 1980s whisky loch and ultimately closed its doors in 1983. Since then, Brora has become one of Scotland’s most iconic and collectable lost distilleries. This bottling is a vatting of 12 American oak hogsheads distilled in 1978 and laid down during the distillery’s “age of peat” from 1969 to 1983. Many believe this period to be the most interesting in the distillery’s history as the team produced smoky malts using heavily peated north Highland barley. Only 1,819 bottles (a nod to the distillery’s original opening in 1819) were released one year before the lost distillery was resurrected in May 2021.
