The 2019 vintage is a year of great consistency in Burgundy, particularly for Pinot Noir. The quality of the vintage shines through from lowly Bourgogne Rouge to the Grands Crus – making this earlier-drinking Pinot Noir from Charles van Canneyt a discerning buy at just £12.50 a bottle in bond.
The grapes are sourced from vineyards around the Côte de Nuits – vineyards Charles knows like the back of his hand, with his family domaine (Hudelot-Noëllat) based in Chambolle-Musigny.
Charles van Canneyt is widely considered to be one of the most promising young winemakers in the Côte de Nuits. With demand consistently out-stripping supply of his wines, he decided to set up his own micro-négociant business. Using his connections throughout the Côte d'Or and his intimate knowledge of the vineyards, he is able to source top-quality grapes to produce a range including this Bourgogne Rouge. In 2019, this offers amazing value; it is full of gorgeously rich, ripe, dark cherry fruit, with supple and rounded tannins making the wine approachable on release.
Volumes – as everywhere – are low this year, with only 400 cases of this wine made.
There’s half the normal volume of this in 2019, due to the year’s tiny berries, but the vintage has produced an exceptional rendition of Bourgogne Rouge, which completely overdelivers on its appellation status. The wine has an impressively deep, ruby colour with rich, concentrated fruit of notable clarity. It is very pure raspberry-fruited with soft tannins and moderate structure providing great early-drinking pleasure.

“Concentrated in colour, the 2019 Bourgogne Rouge from Charles van Canneyt is nicely expressive on the nose, with juicy little red berries, boysenberry and white flower notes. On the palate, the wine is ample, rich and multi-layered with red and darker fruit, from ripe dark cherry to hints of cassis. The minerality is beautiful and offers freshness alongside great balance, with supple and rounded tannins. The wine finishes with an iodine note that gives a sense of purity and freshness. A superb example of this cuvée, it will be approachable upon release and evolve nicely for the next five years.”
