2018 Almaviva

The outstanding new vintage from Mouton Rothschild’s Chilean project

“A joy to taste”

98 Points – James Suckling

Almaviva is a collaboration between two giants in the world of wine – Bordeaux’s Château Mouton Rothschild and Concha y Toro. Combining Bordelais experience with the Maipo Valley’s perfect climate, the idea was to produce the country’s first Grand Cru Classé equivalent – a wine that has become, in James Suckling’s words, “a benchmark for the reds of the Andes”.

The latest release of this extraordinary wine is now available. The 2018 vintage has been described as the best of the past 20 years in Chile – an almost perfect year that produced wines with amazing freshness, especially at Almaviva in the coolest reaches of the Maipo Valley.

The resulting wine, made by the talented Michael Friou, is superb: James Suckling, awarding it 98 points, describes it as “beautifully nuanced”, “refined” and “a joy to taste”; while Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutiérrez found it “seamless… with clout and balance”.

“This is such a beautifully nuanced red with tobacco, dried herbs, wet earth and currants. Some leather and rose petals, too. Full-bodied and chewy, yet refined with great polish. It’s rich and intense at the same time. Very focused center palate. Broad layers of tannin and fruit. A blend of 72% cabernet sauvignon, 19% carmenere, 6% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot. Better after 2024, but already a joy to taste.”
