2018 Croix Canon + Ségla

Outstanding second wines from two top-performing estates

Ch. Rauzan-Ségla and Ch. Canon are two of Bordeaux’s leading names today. In 2018, Rauzan-Ségla’s Grand Vin scored an aggregate 99 points from the critics, while Neal Martin described the 2018 Ch. Canon as the best vintage since their watershed 2015.

It’s no surprise that the release of their second wines from the much-celebrated vintage have been greatly anticipated. And – now available – 2018 Croix Canon and Ségla have not disappointed. The highest-scoring vintages to date, these are superb second wines that belie their status. Both are available for delivery in summer 2022.

The 2018 Ségla has fantastic, amplified Margaux-esque aromatics that soar from the glass. Deep magenta in colour, the wine is distinctly red-fruited in character with rich, dark cherry, red plum and cassis fruit all filling the palate. It is texturally plush and powerful with very fine, elegant, integrated tannins that provide impressive depth. The toasted dry spice notes from some quality oak is well integrated with the fruit and the wine has great balance. A vibrancy and freshness help sustain the flavours on a long finish. This is only going to get better.

This is more restrained and tightly knit than the more aromatically open 2018 Ségla. But, with a bit of coaxing, lovely brooding liquorice, incense, violet aromas and toasted dry spice notes emerge. The wine has impressive weight on the palate with rich, purple-fruited plum and cooked blueberry notes, dark chocolate, a touch of ferric minerality and dried bloody notes. The concentrated tannins are beautifully layered and there is a real mid-palate density to the wine that belies its second wine status. This is beautifully concentrated and already delicious but will evolve beautifully over the next five years.
