Pic & Chapoutier: A Perfect Pairing

FINE+RARE are proud to introduce a pair of fantastic wines from Anne-Sophie Pic and Michel Chapoutier...

Food and wine have always been a match made in heaven. So imagine what happens when probably the Rhône Valley's most famous cook and oenologist collaborate on a wine range...

Anne-Sophie Pic is one of the highest profile female cooks in the world and the legendary Michel Chapoutier has been described by Robert Parker as "the world's leading irreverent genius in winemaking". They have paired up to produce a pair of wines we are proud to offer...

Anne-Sophie Pic

Anne-Sophie Pic was raised at her family's restaurant (now over 120 years old) in Valence in the South of France, just a stone's throw from the vineyards of Cornas. She followed her father Jacques and grandfather Andre into the kitchen. Ever since, the accolades have poured in. In 2007 she regained the restaurant's third Michelin star and became the only woman to feature in Le Figaro's list of top twenty richest chefs in France. The former achievement was monumentally important for Pic as it restored the restaurant to the prestigious position it had occupied before the death of her father and made her only the fourth woman to receive such an award. However, featuring in Le Figaro's rich list may have grated a little with the humble Pic as she prefers to be called a cook rather than a three Michelin star chef. As well as her five-star hotel, two restaurants, gourmet canteen and shop in Valence, she also runs the Michelin starred La Dame de Pic in Paris and the two Michelin starred restaurant at Beau Rivage Palace in Switzerland, but has recently pulled out of two planned restaurants in New York. In 2011 she pipped Elena Arzak and Nadia Santini to win the Veuve Clicquot World's Best Female Chef award and was named a Knight of the French Legion of Honour. Anne-Sophie Pic's palate has been called "impeccable" and she says: "I attach supreme importance to getting the flavours just right." So it is only fitting that she should team up with a fellow perfectionist from the Rhône Valley, Michel Chapoutier, to produce a wine range...

Michel Chapoutier

This Rhône legend needs little introduction to readers of this blog, you will no doubt be very aware of his unrivalled 100 point scores from Robert Parker and his exquisite Sélections Parcellaires. However, to find out more about Maison M. Chapoutier and view all his currently available wines visit our Chapoutier page.

The Chapoutier and Pic families have been neighbours and friends for many years. And so with Anne-Sophie and Michel's shared love of perfect pairings, simplicity, innovation and expression of regionality/terroir; a wine collaboration was inevitable. It started with a few hectares in Saint-Péray, a region who's culinary-friendly wines featured in the legendary Larousse Gastronomique, and now the Pic & Chapoutier range encompasses nine wines in total from the Rhône Valley. The Pic-Chapoutier combination have collaborated to produce wines that accompany food beautifully...

Pic & Chapoutier at FINE+RARE

Over the last two decades, through the popularity of the Sélections Parcellaires with our customers, FINE+RARE have built a strong relationship Maison M. Chapoutier. As a result we were granted an opportunity to taste the Pic-Chapoutier range and sell our two stand out wines with exclusivity in the UK. The highlights for us were the Saint-Péray Lieu-dit Payrolles and Cornas Bio from 2012,  a vintage classed as outstanding by Robert Parker, excellent by Wine Enthusiast and was scored at 93 points by Wine Spectator who describe the wines as: "fine-grained and lengthy, with deliciously ripe flavours; well-balanced and should cellar well."

Backed by not only one of France's finest cooks but also one of the world's greatest winemakers, both wines represent excellent value based on their pedigree and their scores. Furthermore, both wines have just entered the critics' drinking windows making the perfect to drink now or develop further in your cellar.

Saint-Péray Lieu-dit Payrolles 2012

Hand-harvested, pure Marsanne grown on granite soils. Cask fermented with natural yeasts and aged in 600 litre barrels for up to a year. Described by Jeb Dunnock as having "rock-star aromatics", while Josh Raynolds said that with its "surprising vivacity and excellent finishing power and breadth" he would "put this complex wine up against plenty of whites from hermitage." Anne-Sophie Pic recommends pairing with John Dory and cucumber. We say:

"Deep ripe stone and tropical fruits. Full-bodied, creamy vanilla notes with a rich butteriness. High acidity is balanced beautifully with the concentration, alcohol and body. Long finish with tangy tangerine notes." - May 2016, F+R

Cornas Bio 2012

Hand-harvested, organically-grown and certified, pure Syrah from three levels of Cornas: the foothills, the limestone slopes and the higher altitude granitic soils. Macerated and fermented in concrete tanks and aged in used oak barrels for 14 months. Jeb Dunnock compliments its "impressive focus, bright acidity and clean finish", while Josh Raynolds calls it "quite suave, even elegant for Cornas." Anne-Sophie Pic recommends serving this with duck confit and herbs. We say:

"Beautifully perfumed nose with rich, ripe, dark fruits; plum, black cherry and delicate oak notes. Perfectly balanced with rounded tannins, ripe acidity and excellent concentration. Classic long Chapoutier finish." - May 2016, F+R
